There’s a Harvest Field Out There

ATTENTION ALL COMMANDERS! There is a harvest field in our local schools. At the end of the 2003/2004 school year I was presented with a troubling fact that our elementary aged children were and are losing their innocence at a very young age. I first wanted to look the other way but soon realized that it is the parents, community leaders, Royal Rangers commanders, and many others in authority that are looking the other way. This is enabling alternative, non-Christian avenues to our children which enhance the loss of their innocence.

As a father of three and a Royal Rangers commander I felt a duty to stand up and be a champion for our children’s innocence. I began to talk to my son’s second grade teacher about Royal Rangers. She then began to talk with other teachers and school staffers without my knowledge. So when I approached the head of the PTA — who is also the school nurse — she was open to the idea of Royal Rangers being presented to the school children. She told me I needed to develop an informative flyer about Royal Rangers that gave both directions to our outpost meetings as well as meeting times.

After designing the flyer I went to the school’s vice principal to see if the information on the flyer was acceptable or not. She then gave me a few pointers on how to make my flyer more attractive for presentation to the children as well as to their parents. The next step was to talk with the principal about Royal Rangers and how Royal Rangers could make a difference in our schools. The principal then gave me the okay to distribute the flyers throughout the school. I thought to myself that this is too easy and there must be a catch. So then I asked the principal if I needed to get any additional approval from the school district to distribute the flyers. She told me that the principal is the one responsible for approving any literature that is to be distributed in the school.

Our church then printed 250 Royal Rangers flyers and sent them home with all of the boys kindergarten through fifth grade. We gained two boys over the summer and as a result, one of the boys accepted Christ. I am about to release another 250 flyers this month in the same school. Furthermore, our outpost has adopted the school this year and will be providing a brisket lunch for the teachers and staff. We will also be providing doughnuts once a month for the teachers.

Now I know many of you reading this article might be thinking “I don’t have enough time,” or “my job won’t give me time,” or whatever the excuse might be; but the simple truth is that most employers would jump on the bandwagon and probably even assist with some of the expenses, which comes to about $0.50 per day. I also found that most employers will have a better opinion of you because of your actions and not your words.

So are you READY? If you are, then get busy by contacting your local school and get involved. A copy of the flyer our church is sending out is posted on the Waco sectional web site at www.royalrangers.net/ntd/waco. A coke a day is a small price to pay for our children.
