Commanders,

I want to say thank you to everyone who has offered their support and congratulations to me on the recent announcement concerning the district commander position. I’m humbled by the trust the district leadership has placed in me and excited by the opportunities that are ahead of us in the Royal Rangers ministry in North Texas. We have a strong district and we will continue to build on those strengths as we all work to reach, teach, and keep boys for Christ through this ministry.

We have many exciting things coming up in the next few months in Royal Rangers. The staff that has been in place has continued working on plans for the upcoming events even through the last two months of transition time. I appreciate their efforts and commitment to the tasks during this time.

District Staff

You may be aware of the fact that when Paul Patterson announced his resignation as district commander, the entire district staff was asked to submit their resignations too. This was to give the new district commander flexibility in structuring the staff as needed. I have some staff appointments ready to announce in this e-mail, and others will be forthcoming very soon. Part of any delay in making announcements is due to the need to get an individual’s pastor’s and sectional presbyter’s approval prior to offering them a staff appointment, and that process couldn’t start until last Monday when my appointment was made. So in the last week the following positions have been offered and accepted on the district staff:

Rick Beebe — Deputy District Commander
Dick Harris — District Training Coordinator
Gary Bierschwale — District FCF President
Jeff Kersey — District Camps/Productions Coordinator
Randy Woods — District Missions Coordinator
Ronnie Franklin — District Communications Coordinator

Other appointments on the district staff and district FCF staff will be announced as soon as the necessary approvals are obtained.

Upcoming Activities

We have a number of activities coming up in the next few months. We will be using this e-mail list and the web site to post details of all of these activities. We will also be using the Signal Fire, but the most up-to-date information will always be on the web site at http://ntd.royalrangers.net

Brush Poppin, March 9-10. This camp is for members of the Frontiersmen Camping Fellowship (FCF) and guests who are interested in learning more about FCF. It will be held this coming weekend, March 9-10 at Old Fort Parker near Groesbeck. Cost is $20 for men (Old Timers) and $10 for boys (Young Bucks). There will be fellowship, spiritual renewal, and competitions, including: flint and steel fire starting, knife and hawk throwing, outfit judging, cooking, and black powder shooting. Contact our FCF president Gary Bierschwale (gary.bierschwale@verizon.net) for more information. Bring your boys and make a weekend out of this exciting camp!

Commanders Conference and Awards Ceremony, April 21. Members of the district staff will be going to Springfield next week for our National Royal Rangers Council. We will have the chance to hear from our new national commander and learn of any changes that are happening in the program. We will return to Texas and will share all we learn with you at our annual Commanders Conference on April 21. This will be a day of updates and training. Yes, we will have some modules (new and old), and other training sessions. But the focus will be on making sure commanders know what is happening in the district and in the national Royal Rangers programs.

At the end of the day we will be recognizing all commanders who have earned one of the annual Commanders Awards (Leaders Service Award, Outpost Commanders Award, Senior Commanders Award, or one of the staff cluster awards — blue, gold, and silver). Be sure to get your award application from the national web site (http://royalrangers.ag.org/applications), fill it out, and send it in to the district office by the March 15th deadline. The awards cost $15 for the first year to cover the cost of the medal, and $3 for each additional year. The district office mailing address is North Texas District Royal Rangers, PO Box 1188, Hurst, TX 76053.

The schedule, cost, and application for the Commanders Conference will be posted on the district web site by the end of the week, and will be announced on this e-mail list.

Great Texas Pow Wow, May 31-June 3. This is the BIG camp that we have been talking about for over a year. All three Royal Rangers districts in the state of Texas — North Texas, South Texas, and West Texas — will all be joining together for this big event. More details are available at http://www.greattexaspowwow.com/

Sarge Training Academy, June 24-29. This will be the 20th anniversary of Sarge Training Academy. Make plans now to bring your boys to participate in this special anniversary edition of this camp. We will have our merits camps (AMC and the Frontier Brigade Camp), JTC and AJTC, and others. Additional details are on the district web site and are also available from Jeff Kersey (jeff@royalrangers.net).

I look forward to serving with you in the Royal Rangers ministry. If there is anything I can do to assist you in your ministry, let me know. The North Texas District Royal Rangers staff and I are here to help you reach, teach, and keep boys for Christ.
